With the many companies selling hemp and CBD products today, you must do your research before purchasing any hemp or CBD product to ensure you are in good hands.

Any product or business promising to relieve your pain, anxiety or any other ailment is not to be trusted. Every person’s body is different and takes to products differently, much like the way some people are sensitive to certain foods. Every person can and will process a hemp or CBD product differently, causing each individual taking a hemp or CBD supplement to process and gain from that supplement in their unique way.

Before getting into what exactly to look for when safely shopping for a hemp/CBD product, here is a brief rundown of what hemp is and what naturally occurring CBDs are.

What is Hemp?

Hemp is a strain of the cannabis sativa plant species that is grown specifically for the industrial uses of its derived products. Because hemp is very, very rich in fiber, it has been used to manufacture many products including clothes, plastic, car parts, construction materials, paper, body care products, fuel, and food and beverages.

You’ve probably come across hemp products at grocery stores like hemp milk, hemp hearts, or hemp seeds. Hemp is categorized as a “superfood,” putting it in line with other common superfoods like avocados, goji berries, salmon, blueberries, and acai – foods all known for their rich nutrient density and supposed health benefits.

What is CBD?

CBD, more formerly regarded as cannabidiol, is a phytocannabinoid of the cannabis plant. It is one of many naturally occurring cannabinoids found in the hemp plant of the cannabis plant which accounts for up to 40 percent of the plant’s extract.

3 Things To Check When Shopping For A Hemp/CBD Product

Look At The Product’s Labeling and Ingredients

Any reputable hemp or CBD product should clearly state its ingredients on the label. This includes any ingredients contained in the product, the supplement facts of the product, and the serving size.

Products made up of natural and organic ingredients are unquestionably what you want to see on the back of a product label.

The product’s label should be transparent about the suggested use of the product, typically termed similar to an instruction like this: “Take one capsule daily or as directed by your healthcare professional. Can be taken with or without food.”

There should also be a warning section on the label. For example, the Zakah Life Full Spectrum Hemp Deluxe 300 capsule bottle clearly states under its warning section, “If pregnant or nursing, consult your physician before taking this or any other supplement. Consult your physician before use if you have a medical condition or are taking any other medications.”

It may also state things like, “Not intended for use or sale under the age of 21,” and/or “Keep out of reach of children.” These are both good signs the company’s intention and priority is to keep the consumer safe.

Simple tip:  Just like fewer ingredients on the labels of foods we eat = better and safer for our bodies, the same rule applies with hemp and CBD products:  The fewer ingredients, the better. Furthermore, the more organic and the more natural the ingredients, the better.

Also, don’t be fooled by the snazzy marketing of products. Just because a product looks like it’s legitimate doesn’t mean it is. Read everything on the label and be sure you understand what it is telling you about the product.

Look For Specific Certifications

In addition to posting ingredients and supplement facts, product labels should also state that the product at hand has been lab-tested. It may say something like, “Lab tested for purity and potency,” which is something you want to see. As a consumer, you have a right to know where your intended supplement comes from and how it has been processed.

You will want to ask for the company’s Certificate of Authenticity, or COA, on the product you are seeking. You will want to see the company has tested for a full cannabinoid profile, heavy metal analysis, pesticide analysis, microbiological contaminants, pathogenic bacterial contaminants, and an analysis of volatile organic compounds: These specific tests are all required by the FDA on every product each time a new batch of products is ran. If a company cannot provide this information, you cannot and should not trust them or their products as they are not following the safety regulations that are put in place for the safety of the consumer.

That said, a trustworthy company selling hemp/CBD products should plainly state where their products are made, produced, and manufactured. For example, all ZL products openly declare they are made from certified, non-intoxicating hemp, adding that lab results are available upon request.

Product labels may have a reading like, “Manufactured by this company at this address,” or, “Distributed by this company,” and should state a phone number consumers can call if they have any questions about intended use, side effects, or anything else they may be concerned with.

Only Buy From A Reputable Brand

When buying a hemp or CBD product (or any dietary supplement), be sure to choose a brand you trust. Examine the product label for proof the company follows strict Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs). Companies that hold certifications from outside agencies like NSF International are well-trusted organizations.

The company’s website should state where its products are manufactured and sold, and have a stamp of approval that they are legally allowed to be selling the products they are selling.

You should be able to contact the company you are looking at at any time and ask them any question you may have about a product you’re looking into, and they should have answers to every question you have.
